Award for Poznan University of Economics Publishing for book of Witold Abramowicz entitled "Information Filtering"
The twelfth Poznan Days of Scientific Books have taken place on October 9-11. The book fair was accompanied by the Best Academic Textbook published in 2008 competition. The first prize was granted to Poznan University of Economics Publishing for the new book authored by Witold Abramowicz - "Information Filtering", published in Poznan 2008.
The book devoted to the topics concerned filtering of information is the many-years achievement of work at the Poznan University of Economics, Confederal Technical University in Zurich, Switzerland and the Humboldt University in Berlin. It summarizes the results of numerous research projects, including many financed by the European Union.
The publication is intended for developers, conscious users and students interested in advanced methods of finding information on the Internet, methods of representation of information, formalizing the information needs of users of information systems, and applications of information filtering in e-business and administration. The book systematizes knowledge on the filtering of information. For practitioners, it is a source of inspiration for building new systems and creating interesting applications of well-known solutions.
"This is a pioneering study, having enormous values of both scientific and practical - especially during the construction of the information society and the increasing role of the Internet. [...] I believe that this is a monograph for all those people who deal seriously with problems of designing modern management systems and Internet applications. And within this group it certainly will be well received [...] The author is not only a recognized scientific authority in Europe, but also a creator of research school, which has been created in this area from scratch" (from review by Prof. Jerzy Kisielnicki).

Open Lecture: "Developing Fair Negotiation Support Systems" by Prof. John Zeleznikow.
We would like to invite everyone to the open lecture given by Prof John Zeleznikow (School of Information Systems Victoria University, Autralia).
Time: 15 February 2008, 9:15
Venue: Collegium Altum, lecture hall 1815
The lecture will be delivered in English.
Abstract
In previous work on mediation and negotiation support systems, we have focused upon using integrative bargaining. When end-users of our family-mediation and plea-bargaining systems have evaluated our systems, they commented that the systems met their personal needs, but not the interests of fairness or justice. For example, in Family Mediation, they meet the interests of the parents and not the children.
For negotiation support systems to be widely used, issues of fairness and justice must be addressed. We are currently developing measures for assessing the outcomes of online negotiation in the legal domains of sentencing, plea-bargaining and family mediation. Such methods will form the basis of a new model for evaluating fairness and consistency within online dispute resolution systems. This model will inform the construction of fairer and more consistent systems of IT based negotiation support.
We conclude by discussing a new project we are about to commence focusing upon developing negotiation support systems that promote constructive relationships following disputes.
The Speaker
John Zeleznikow has written over 160 peer-reviewed articles and three books: Building Intelligent Legal Information Systems: Knowledge Representation and Reasoning in Law, Knowledge Discovery from Legal Databases and Enhanced Dispute Resolution through the use of Information Technology.
He has received over $A7million in research grants and has been active in building legal decision support systems for legal aid, family mediation and body corporate organisations. His research interests include issues of fairness in negotiation, Decision and Negotiation Support Systems, Knowledge Management and Knowledge Discovery from Databases.
